Eco-Friendly Home Cleaning

Using just a few simple items that are not harmful to you or the environment, you can clean and sanitise your house, wash your clothes, clear your drains, wash your dishes and so much more.  Bicarb, vinegar, lemon juice, salt and hydrogen peroxide are all you need to tackle all your household cleaning safely and inexpensively. For example, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar are excellent at killing mould and mildew; vinegar diluted 50% with water makes a superb streak-free window cleaner; bicarb, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are great general purpose cleaners and disinfectants; use half a cup each of bicarb and vinegar or salt to clear blocked drains; use vinegar or a salt and hot water solution in drains weekly to keep them clear; sprinkle bicarb and salt in bins to eliminate odours and control bacteria.

Due to its alkalinity, bicarb does an amazing job of general cleaning and washing of clothes, plus it’s environmentally friendly. Combines well with vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to produce a powerful cleaning duo.

For laundry: use 1/2 cup per load (put in dispensor). Use vinegar for the rinse cycle.

General surface cleaner: sprinkle onto surfaces, clean with water and rinse.

Floor cleaner: Add 2 tablespoons to a bucket of water to which 1 cup of vinegar has been added.

Drain cleaning: Pour 1 litre boiling water down the drain followed by 1/2 cup bicarb. Leave for 5 minutes. Follow with a mixture of 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup very hot water. Leave to work for 10 minutes before pouring 1 litre of boiling water down the drain as a final flush.

Odour removal: Sprinkle into bins or leave in a dish in the fridge or bathroom to absorb odours.

Hydrogen peroxide is water with an additional molecule of oxygen. It is this that makes it a potent oxidiser and sterilizer. Also makes a good alternative to chlorine bleach. And it’s environmentally friendly!

Use 3% (10 volume) hydrogen peroxide for general household use.

Contact with skin can cause irritation and tingling, in which case rinse with lots of water.

H202 is the natural alternative to bleach.

Add 1 cup H202 to a machine load of washing or into a full bucket of water for soaking whites. Leave to soak for at least an hour or even over night for better results. Although safer than regular bleach, still treat it as a bleach and exercise caution – test for colour fastness etc. before attempting to remove stains from coloured clothes.

H202 makes a wonderful general surface cleaner and disinfectant. Just spray onto area and leave on for a few minutes before wiping surface area with a cloth. Dirt is loosened by the peroxide and is easy to remove. In the process of cleaning, the peroxide is also killing germs and bacteria through its powerful disinfectant action.

I keep hydrogen peroxide in 500ml spray bottles in the bathrooms and kitchen.

Hydrogen peroxide itself will not burn, but its decomposition liberates oxygen which supports combustion. Thus handle with care and keep away from children!

A natural non-iodated coarse sea salt for all your needs from cooking to household cleaning and disinfecting.
