EPSOM SALTS (Magnesium Sulphate B.P)

Epsom salts is the common name for magnesium sulphate a naturally occurring compound of magnesium, sulphur and oxygen. Epsom salts is commonly used as a bath salt or part of a bath salt mix. Soaking in a therapeutic bath containing 2 cups of Epsom salts soothes mind, body and soul, eases muscular aches and pains, cramps, treats inflammation, heals eczema (many testimonials to be found at earthclinic.com), wounds and other skin problems, detoxifies the body (due to the sulphur content) and raises magnesium levels. To unwind after a stressful day and encourage a good night’s sleep, take an Epsom salts bath! An Epsom salts bath taken 3 times weekly is a highly effective, affordable way to help tame the stress and tension that comes with a busy life. It is also excellent to soothe aching muscles after sports activities and to put back the magnesium that has been lost through strenuous exertion and perspiration.

For a blissful experience, add your choice of essential oils. Lavender, rose geranium, bergamot, cedarwood, ylang ylang and sandalwood are particularly calming and uplifting.

Epsom salt baths have many other benefits and can remedy a myriad of health complaints such as:

Bronchial asthma

Migraine headaches

(Both of the above are constrictive conditions that are helped by magnesium’s action as a vasodilator)

Poor circulation (which impacts heart health)

Swelling and pain from sprains and bruises

High blood pressure (magnesium helps as it is a vasodilator)

Poor insulin function

Low energy – increases energy and stamina by encouraging the production of ATP

Low mood – magnesium helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation.

NOTE: EPSOM SALT BATHS SHOULD BE AVOIDED BY THOSE WITH KIDNEY PROBLEMS AND USED WITH CAUTION BY THOSE WITH LOW BLOOD PRESSURE. IF YOU HAVE LOW BLOOD PRESSURE, AVOID EXCESSIVELY HOT BATHS.

Epsom salts can also be used in a foot bath. For therapeutic benefits, use 1/2 a cup Epsom salts in a small basin of water and soak your feet for 20 minutes. This also helps soften dry and cracked heels.

OTHER EPSOM SALTS USES

HEALTH:

To relieve constipation, Epsom salts can be taken internally for its laxative effect. However, this should not be done without appropriate guidance and support.

Treat toenail fungus by soaking your affected toes in hot water mixed with a handful of Epsom salts three times a day.

For athlete’s foot, soak feet in an Epsom salts foot bath.

To ease the discomfort of gout and reduce inflammation, add 2-3 teaspoons of Epsom salts to a basin and immerse the affected foot/joint. The water should be comfortably hot. Soak for about 30 minutes.

To remove splinters, soak affected skin area in an Epsom salts bath to aid the drawing out of the splinter.

BEAUTY / PERSONAL CARE:

Exfoliate dead skin – mix a handful of Epsom salt with a tablespoon of bath or olive oil and rub all over your wet skin gently to exfoliate and soften. Rinse thoroughly and moisturise.

Exfoliating skin cleanser – as an exfoliating skin cleanser, mix half a teaspoon of Epsom salt with your regular cleansing cream. Gently massage into skin and rinse with cold water.

Dislodge blackheads – add a teaspoon of Epsom salt and 3 drops iodine into a half cup of boiling water. Apply this mixture to the blackheads using an ear bud.

Hair volumizer – combine equal parts deep conditioner and Epsom salt and warm in a pan. Work the warm mixture through your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

HOME AND GARDEN:

In gardening, Epsom salts are also used to correct a magnesium and/or sulphur deficiency. Magnesium-hungry crops such as potatoes, roses, tomatoes and peppers benefit greatly from magnesium sulphate application. Use weekly.

Add 2 tablespoons of Epsom salts to a gallon of water and sprinkle on your lawn to keep the grass healthy and green.

Prevent slugs by sprinkling Epsom salt on or near interior entry points.

As you can see, this simple old fashioned remedy is so valuable that it deserves to be a standard household item. I even read a story where a dog had been bitten by a poisonous snake and the owner poured a magnesium sulphate solution down its throat and it survived.
